15-year-old girl dies after Cork sledding accident

A girl dies, and another three teenagers are hospitalised, after their home-made sleigh hits a tree on a Douglas golf course.

Updated 17.27

A TEENAGE GIRL has been killed after an accident involving a home-made sleigh at a golf club in Co Cork.

The girl, 15, was one of four children riding on a sheet of wood, which they were using as a home-made sleigh, at Frankfield Golf Club in Douglas when the home-made sled went out of control and struck a tree.

RTÉ News reports that all four of the children – aged between 14 and 16 – had been brought to a Cork hospital, where the girl later died from her injuries.

The other girl on the sled has suffered spinal injuries, while the two boys on the sled – who are understood to be brothers – have also been injured.

One brother, who fell off the sled as it veered out of control, incurred a broken cheekbone, while the other has a broken leg.

Cork had experienced heavy snowfall overnight last night and many children had been sledding on the contours of the golf course throughout the day, RTÉ added.
