Military ceremony commemorates those who died in 1916 Rising

It concluded with an Air Corps fly past.

A CEREMONY TO mark the 99th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising has taken place outside the GPO in Dublin today as part of a series of national events.

The Dublin ceremony was led by the President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Minister for Defence Simon Coveney.

A military parade went from Dublin Castle to the GPO where the National Flag was lowered at noon and the 1916 Proclamation read by Captain Kate Hanrahan from the Defence Forces.

The President then laid a wreath to remember those who died in 1916 and a minute’s silence was observed. Attendance was believed to have been up on previous years, a relatives’ association said.

It concluded with an Air Corps fly past.

The ceremony marked 99 years since the Proclamation was read on the steps of the GPO at the beginning of the 1916 Rising.
