Woman drowns off Achill Island

The Coast Guard was at the scene within minutes after a report of a near drowning, but the woman had passed away.

A WOMAN HAS drowned off Achill Island.

The Achill Island Coast Guard said today that its Rescue 118 helicopter and Achill Coast Guard Unit were called by a local doctor to a ‘near drowning’ at Purteen Harbour, on Achill Island.

It said its Achill units were on scene “in minutes”.

The Coast Guard said that sadly it transpired that the woman had drowned.

RTÉ reports that the woman is believed to have been from the area and that a post-mortem will be carried out on her body, which was removed to Mayo General Hospital.
