SINN FÉIN LEADER Gerry Adams has rejected a suggestion that he was in some way involved in the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.
McConville, a mother of ten, was kidnapped and killed by the IRA before being secretly buried in Co Louth. The IRA denied any involvement in her death until 20 years later, when they gave information about the location of her remains – however the search was abandoned when no remains were found.
Her body was later discovered by chance by walkers on Shelling Hill beach in 2003.
McConville’s family has launched a campaign in Dundalk against Adams, who is standing for election in Louth.
In response to the family’s campaign, Adams “expressed his deep regret at the injustice that was inflicted on the McConville family by republicans”, the BBC reports.
