A case of animal cruelty in Kildare KWWSPCA via Facebook

Finding - and punishing - those who hurt animals can help stop them harming humans

Norway is setting up a dedicated policing unit.

NORWEGIAN POLICE IS creating a unit to investigate cruelty to animals, the government said this week, arguing that those who hurt animals often harm people too.

“First of all, it’s important to take care of our animals, so that they enjoy the rights they have and that there be a follow-up when their rights are violated,” Agriculture Minister Sylvi Listhaug said, describing animals at risk as “often defenceless”.

The initiative “can also help fight crime and attacks against people, since studies show that some of those people who commit crimes and misdemeanors against animals also do the same to people,” Listhaug said.

The initiative will be tested out for three years.

Police in the western county of Sor-Trondelag will appoint three people – an investigator, a legal expert and a coordinator – to fight animal abuse.

Animal rights groups hailed the initiative.

“The process of taking animal abuse seriously has begun,” said Siri Martinsen of the animal rights’ group Noah.

In 2014, 38 cases of animal abuse were reported to police in Norway, according to public radio and television NRK.

Under Norwegian law, acts of animal abuse carry a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

Similar animal rights police units operate in the Netherlands and in Sweden.

Really wish they would make the packaging more eco friendly. Giant plastic bowl for a salad. What’s wrong with cardboard like other salad outlets

@john Appleseed: What’s wrong with cardboard is that it quickly becomes damp and gross and disgusting unless your salad or sandwich is bone dry

Maybe Neil but we can’t possibly maintain this level of waste. We are drowning in plastic. Choking our seas, killing our wildlife but not a slightly damp salad?

Most workplaces don’t have recycling bins. The bins are the street aren’t recycled and I suspect very little of what goes into the recycling bin is actually recycled. If it were easy we wouldn’t have so much plastic waste in our seas and landfills.

Eat the food, delight in it’s tasty goodness, close the plastic container and take it somewhere there is a recycling bin. Or ask your grown up to do it for you after they’ve spoon fed you your tasty food.

This Chopped food is really good value and very tasty. Saw them in Dublin Airport first then Whitewater in Newbridge and it’s well worth the try. Very positive to see them make a success of their business and now expanding.

Unless the Irish public spend more on food this move doesn’t create more jobs for the Irish Economy as a whole, all it does is fragment the industry even further. An economy generates wealth when one produces something that is exported.

@Sara Elia López: an economy generates wealth when the profits of a business are not exported to a foreign country. Chopped profits > burgerking profits, for ireland. Thanks for the b0ll0xology economics lesson though.

@Sara Elia López: Actually there are plenty of people who will spend money on a salad who might not spend money otherwise. Too many places are full of unhealthy fast food and stodgy heavy precooked meals. If there is a healthy alternative I’d actually choose to buy food rather then not bother. I’m sure there are many others like me out there. Also money will be generated in the economy via new jobs whether full time or part time allowing extra spending and hopefully less social welfare. Then there is the suppliers, rent paid on premises, money spent on marketing etc. Profit cannot be simplified to some sort of food equation related to the amount of population and how much they eat.

This is good news in a sense.

The article fails to mention some basics though.

    1. What is the split between full time and part time in the new jobs?
    2. Will Chopped be using zero hour contracts or does it respect human rights?
    3. Will Chopped be paying minimum wage or living wage to its staff.

When you bear in mind that capitalism is as depraved a system as communism was then these are basic questions.

    @canuckandgo:

Agreed – companies work practices, employment conditions and contract types need to be publicly acknowledged when discussing them.

I have no knowledge if Chopped engages in cancer capitalism and if it engages in human rights abuses of its current staff through the use of zero hour contracts,.

This information that it is in the public interest to know however.
