Investigation underway after resident dies at Áras Attracta centre

The HSE has confirmed it is liaising with the gardaí on the matter.

AN INVESTIGATION IS underway after a woman in her 50s died suddenly at the Áras Attracta care home in Mayo.

The woman in her early 50s died in the communal kitchen area of one of the bungalows at around 10pm last night.

Gardaí are investigating as they would any sudden death and say the investigation direction will be decided by the results of a post mortem.

The centre was the focus of an RTÉ PrimeTime show which highlighted poor care standards and abuse of patients.

The HSE confirmed that an incident occurred last night in Aras Attracta where a resident has sadly passed away.

In a statement, the HSE said:

The resident’s family have been informed and would like to have their privacy respected at this very sad time.
All relevant authorities have been notified including the Gardaí, the Coroner, HIQA and the Health & Safety Authority.
The HSE wishes to express our sincere condolences to the resident’s family.

The HSE also confirmed that in accordance with national policy, a senior safety incident management team is being convened, chaired by Chief Officer Tony Canavan.

This team will include the relevant expertise from HR, quality & safety/risk management, safeguarding practice and communications. The team will carry out an immediate assessment and establish the facts, ensure appropriate support to service users and their families and address any immediate safety concerns. They will also establish a full investigation team to review the circumstances of this case.

The Minister of State with responsibility for Disability, Finian McGrath, TD expressed his sincere sympathy with the family of the resident of Áras Attracta who passed away.
