Result of ASTI Haddington Road vote expected this evening

In a second vote on the Government pay deal, union leaders have urged secondary teachers to reject it.

THE RESULT OF  a second vote by members of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland on the Haddington Road agreement is expected this evening.

Teachers voting in the process had until yesterday evening to cast their vote with counting due to begin this morning.

The ASTI rejected the Government pay deal in the first instance in a vote in September and led to  subsequent industrial action by teachers when they refused to attend meetings that took place outside of normal school hours or take on any extra duties without additional pay.

Discussions between ASTI representatives and Government officials led to some clarification being put in place but  meeting of union’s central executive council recommended that the members reject the new proposals.
