Audi's new RS 4 Avant has arrived... and it's bonkers

Audi’s all-new fast estate is quite the performer.

WHEN IT COMES to high-performance estate cars, Audi is something of a dab hand. Now there’s even more choice with the arrival of the all-new RS 4 Avant.

Unsurprisingly the new car boasts some impressive performance figures. Even though power output at 450hp is the same as its predecessor, that is achieved through a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 rather than the 4.2-litre V8 of old.

It still strikes an impressive sight, with bulging arches and larger intakes around the front. It isn’t quite so in-your-face as the last model and to most people this car will fly under the radar, but you can be sure of knowing nods of approval from those who know what it is.

More importantly torque output rises from 430Nm to a whopping 600Nm in the new car while the 0-100km/h dash now takes just 4.1 seconds. Impressive for an estate car that is still capable of swallowing up 505 litres of cargo before you even consider dropping the rear seats down. Power is distributed to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro transmission and an eight-speed gearbox.

Pricing starts at €102,350 and the many optional extras include being able to raise the electronically-limited top speed from 250 to 280km/h. One of the other improvements is the modest reduction in CO2 emissions meaning that Audi’s mid-sized estate car no longer resides in the highest tax band, dropping down to Band F, with an annual cost of €1,200. According to Audi’s official figures the new RS 4 Avant also benefits from a 17 percent reduction in fuel consumption.
