A 27-YEAR-OLD Irishman has died after falling off a houseboat in Australia, local media reports.

The body of the man was taken from the Murray River in the town of Echuca Moama on the New South Wales-Victoria border overnight.

He has been named locally as Niall Quinn from Silverbridge, near Newry in Co Armagh.

Local police divers found his body around 14 hours after he fell in, 9 News Australia reports.

It is believed that Niall fell off the houseboat he had been staying on with friends shortly before 2am local time last night, hitting his head in the water.

A large search of the area yielded no results until 3.45pm.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
