Man charged with the murder of his 74-year-old neighbour in Kerry

Michael Ferris of Ballyduff appeared before Tralee District Court this morning.

A 62-YEAR-OLD MAN has been charged with the murder of a man in Kerry.

Michael Ferris of Rattoo, Ballyduff appeared before Tralee District Court this morning.

Just before 9 o’clock yesterday morning emergency services attended the scene of a crash between a car and a teleporter in the Rattoo area of Ballyduff.

The driver of the car, 74-year-old Anthony O’Mahony of Ardoughter, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after 11 o’clock this morning Michael Ferris was brought by detectives to the courthouse on Ashe Street in Tralee.

The farmer, who was dressed in a dark grey suit and blue shirt, was in custody since yesterday.

Detective Sergeant John Heaslip of Listowel Garda Station told the court he arrested Ferris shortly before midnight last night and around a half hour later charged him, under caution, with the murder of Mr O’Mahony in Ballyduff yesterday, contrary to common law.

Ferris made no reply when charged.

Judge James O’Connor remanded the accused in custody and ordered him to reappear before Tralee District Court on Wednesday 12 April.

Ferris’ solicitor Risteard Pierse said his client understood he would be remanded in custody and said it is likely he will apply for bail at the High Court next week.

Pierse expressed concern about his client’s mental state, adding he had spoken with his doctor.

Judge O’Connor made an order that all appropriate medical care be made available to Michael Ferris.
