Here's how many crimes were committed by people on bail last year

Figures show some 10,600 crimes were committed last year by offenders on bail.

FIGURES FOR OFFENCES committed in the last ten years show some 10,693 crimes happened while the offenders were on bail for something else.

The details were released by the Department of Justice to TD Bernard Durkan and show six homocides, nine sexual offences and two kidnappings occurred while offenders were on bail last year.

The revelation comes after a man in Laois attempted to abduct an 11-year-old girl on Wednesday morning. It turned out the man arrested in connection with the incident was on bail at the time.

Over the last ten years, 114 kidnappings occurred in Ireland while the offender was on bail.

A large number of the offences were related to thefts and public order offences were also high in this category.

The most recent CSO figures for re-offending show over 50% commit a crime within three years of being released from prison custody. Female offenders are a little less likely to re-offend at 46.2%.
