A SENIOR POLICE officer from the suburbs of Baltimore has been charged with assault after allegedly biting a man’s testicles during a fight outside Looney’s Irish pub in the city, amid “Cinco de Mayo” celebrations on Tuesday night.

According to a police report, Corporal Michael Flaig got involved in an altercation with a member of the public who had seen his female roommate “having her buttocks rubbed by another male’s buttocks” (allegedly Flaig) on the street, in the Canton neighbourhood of the city.

Flaig, who was off-duty at the time, reportedly refused to stop, was asked again, and began arguing with the man in question, who walked off.

Baltimore police responded to a call just before midnight, and found Flaig in the nearby Claddagh Irish pub, sitting at the bar upstairs.

His t-shirt was bloodstained, and according to police he was slurring his words, had bloodshot eyes, and “a strong odour of alcohol coming from his person.”

Flaig, a 10-year veteran of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, in the suburbs of Baltimore, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and public intoxication.

He has been suspended and placed on paid, administrative leave. His police chief said in a statement:

These charges are disturbing and we have an obligation as police officers to conduct ourselves in a professional manner on and off-duty.

Separately, an off-duty Baltimore firefighter has been charged with assault after allegedly stabbing a member of the public during a fight in a Taco Bell carpark, north of the city.
