Explosion forces evacuation of busy Belfast retail district

The explosion occurred in the Cathedral Quarter, a busy retail district.

THERE HAS BEEN a small explosion in Belfast city centre.

The PSNI say the blast occurred in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, a busy retail district, while police were investigating reports of a suspicious object around 6.45pm.

Surrounding homes and premises have been evacuated, with reports of people in local restaurants being asked to leave by police ahead of the explosion.

DUP Councillor Guy Spence tweeted that some apartments had been evacuated.

No injuries have been reported.
