'A great light, a storyteller and the most brilliant grandad': Bill O'Herlihy laid to rest

The TV presenter died suddenly this week.

BILL O’HERLIHY HAS been laid to rest in Dublin after beautiful tributes were paid to him by his two daughters at a funeral Mass in Foxrock.

The TV presenter died suddenly earlier this week.

The chief celebrant Fr Tom O’Keeffe described the presenter as a “humble family man” who was “a great light” and “a source of joy”.

He banished “darkness by the light of his sheer goodness, generosity, infectious joy and his integrity”, Fr O’Keeffe told the packed church.

“Dad was a storyteller in every aspect of his life,” Bill’s daughter Jill told the congregation.

“This extended to us as small children at night at bedtime. Every night he was the storyteller. He’d start a story and we’d very quickly stop him if we’d heard it before and he’d very quickly create another.”

Her sister, Sally, remembered a caring husband and a “most brilliant granddad”.

And not only was he the best dad, he was really our best friend.

President Michael D Higgins attended the funeral, as did Jobs Minister Richard Bruton and several of O’Herlihy’s RTÉ colleagues.
