Hmmmm.

Unsurprisingly, a court has found in favour of Marvin Gaye’s family during the week so they can now take a plagiarism case against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams.

A judge in the US denied a motion by the pair to reject the accusation they ripped off the Motown track, Got to Give it Up.

During the hearing, both sides presented music experts to dissect Blurred Lines.

“Defendants have made a sufficient showing that elements of ‘Blurred Lines’ may be substantially similar to protected, original elements of ‘Got to Give It Up,’” ruled Judge John Kronstadt of the US District Court for Central California.

“Genuine issues of material fact are present as to the extrinsic similarity of the works. The intrinsic similarity of the works is a jury question.”

Thicke has been inconsistent about the writing process of the song. Initially, he said that he co-wrote the track with Williams after revealing Gaye’s song as his all-time favourite. However, he then rolled back on that statement, claiming he was high on alcohol and pills at the time and Williams did the majority of the work.
