DART line reopens after bomb disposal unit makes safe suspicious device

Device found stashed at pedestrian walkway over DART line at Dun Laoghaire taken away for further tests – it was a viable device.

Updated 17.03

THE DART LINE between Lansdowne Road and Dalkey has been reopened after a lunchtime stoppage. A suspicious device had been discovered near a pedestrian bridge close to the Dún Laoghaire station.

The device, which has been described by an Army spokesperson as having the potential to cause injury, was discovered over the wall of a pedestrian footbridge on the old Dún Laoghaire Road just before this lunchtime. The area had been sealed off and DART services suspended.

An Army spokesperson said that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit arrived on the scene at 1.25pm. He said the team made the device safe without having to carry out a controlled explosion and removed the device from the area at 2.50pm. It has since been taken to a secure military area for further investigation, but had the potential to be a viable explosive device.

The device is not believed to have been planted at the footbridge but stashed away there to be picked up by another party and carried elsewhere.
