Car and personal items stolen from fire station as crews battled Oberstown blaze

Firefighters only noticed items were missing when they went to get changed at the end of their shift early this morning.

Updated 4.45pm

A FIREFIGHTER WHOSE car was stolen in a break-in at a Dublin fire station has thanked the public and gardaí for their help as he has now been reunited with his family car.

The burglary occurred at North Strand fire station last night. The unit on duty was one of the crews sent to tackle the blaze at the Oberstown youth detention centre.

It is understood a ground floor window in a store room was broken. It was only when the firefighters finished their shift that they noticed their lockers had been raided and personal items, including cash, had been stolen.

One firefighter’s car was also missing. The stolen car has since been located by gardaí and two people were arrested in relation to the incident.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, the owner of the car said he was “delighted” to get it back. An off-duty firefighter spotted the car earlier today and a local patrol car went straight to the scene.

“I’ve got my house keys back, the baby seat back, the car has huge sentimental value to me so I just want to thank anyone who shared it online and the guards as well.”
