Man dies and twin brother injured after bull attack in Donegal

Gardaí along with health and safety inspectors are due to carry out an investigation.

Updated 7.40am

A MAN HAS died after an accident on a farm in Donegal. He was named locally as Paddy Dowds.

Investigators believe he was attacked by a bull. Speaking to Morning Ireland today, Paddy’s neighbour Charlie Doherty said that George, Paddy’s brother, will make a full recovery.

He said that when Paddy went out in the morning as usual and didn’t return home, the alarm was raised. George and his nephew went out searching, where they came across the bull that had attacked Paddy.

The bull then went for George.

He was going at him and only for the nephew shouted at George to roll down the hill, to roll away, he rolled way and between that and him shouting, the bull managed to get away. George was lucky the nephew was there and managed to get him out.

He said that more help arrived, but it was too late for Paddy, who had passed away.

The bull is understood to have been put down.

“Bulls are very dangerous. They are very unpredictable – you just never know when they are going to turn on you,” said Doherty. He added that Paddy was “very used” to dealing with cattle and bulls.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident at around 2.30pm yesterday in Toulett.

Paddy was said to be in his mid-60s.

George Dowds was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital. Highland Radio reports that it is understood the two men are twin brothers.

The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí have said investigations will be carried out into the incident.
