Burglary and shooting in Co Longford

A man discovered three males during a burglary on his property this morning. During the incident, one of the men was shot by the property owner’s gun.

ONE MAN WAS injured during a shooting which occurred when a burglary was disturbed in Co Longford this morning.

Gardaí in Edgeworthstown are investigating the circumstances surrounding the burglary and shooting incident at Kilmoyle.

At approximately 6.30am a man in his 30s disturbed three males on his property at Kilmoyle.

During the incident the property owner discharged a shot from a firearm, injuring one of the men.

The second male escaped on foot and was arrested a short distance away following a search of the area by Gardaí.

The third male fled the scene in a van stolen during the incident which contained work tools.

He was arrested when Gardai intercepted the van on the N4 a short time later.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to Mullingar Regional Hospital.

The two arrested men are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Longford Garda Station.

The three men were all in their 20s.

The scene is preserved pending a full technical examination and gardaí from Granard, Longford, Ballymahon, Roscommon, and the Air Support Unit were involved in the operation.

Gardai are appealing for anyone in the  Kilmoyle area between 4.30am and 7.30am to contact Edgeworthstown Garda Station on 043 6671002 or the Garda Confidential Line on  1800 666 111.
