Bus Éireann workers vote to accept LRC plan and abandon strike

Almost 77 per cent of workers voted to endorse Labour Relations Commissions plans to avert ongoing industrial action.

BUS ÉIREANN WORKERS have voted in favour of accepting a package of proposals from the Labour Relations Commission aimed at permanently averting strike action.

Members of SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union voted by a strong margin to accept the LRC’s proposals.

The LRC’s proposals followed the suspension of industrial action by the NBRU, which SIPTU had set about joining, in opposition to cost-cutting plans at the bus operator aimed at helping it stem its massive losses.

The NBRU opposition had resulted in a two-day strike earlier this month, which virtually shut down the entire national bus network when 1,100 of Bus Éireann’s 2,500 drivers went to the picket lines.

The strike had been frozen when the LRC invited both sides to talks on how the savings could be achieved.

Acceptance of the LRC’s proposals, which include contributions from the pay of top earners at the bus carrier, mean the industrial action will now cease.
