Shock after job cuts at Cadbury factories

Trade union unite say they weren’t expecting the extent of the job losses.

UNION MEMBERS ARE to meet with the management of Cadbury’s parent company after the decision to axe 220 jobs in Dublin and Kerry.

Mondelez announced that it is to close its chewing gum plant in Tallaght and will also move the production of TimeOuts to Poland.

The company is to stop production of the Pink Snack chocolate bar with Mondelez confirming that the Cadbury’s plants in Coolock and Rathmore will “no longer produce wafer brands Time Out and Pink Snack”.

Trade union Unite night said yesterday that it was “shocked” by the decision.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Unite’s Richie Browne said that the union was aware the company were looking at their production levels but were taken aback by the result of the review.

“We certainly weren’t expecting anything of the scale the extent or the magnitude of what was announced yesterday,” he said.

Unite says the timescale for the job losses was not yet known nor is whether there will be any compulsory redundancies.

The union is to meet with Mondelez management next week with Browne saying that they company needs to provide more information about its plans.

“We well be endeavouring to mitigate against the job losses,” he added.
