Callely could travel to US as election observer

Is Ivor planning to make use of his suspension time?

IVOR CALLELY’S SUSPENSION from the Seanad does not automatically exclude him from travelling to the US as an election observer for the upcoming elections.

Callely notified officials last month that he had been invited to take part in the trip for the US mid-term elections – which coincides with his period of  suspension.

The senator also said he had been invited to Bosnia Herzegovina for the country’s October elections, RTÉ reports.

His suspension period is due to run up until mid-November.

The Irish government would have to pay the travel expenses for the trip.

A spokesperson for the Oireachtas told RTÉ that no one had been nominated for the US trip yet and that the decision rests with the government’s chief whip.

The chief whip previously nominated Callely to a position with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OCSE), the world’s largest security organisation.
