Get a grip and get your car out of sticky situations

Follow these tips to get your car unstuck from festival mud (or snow or ice in winter!)

GETTING YOUR CAR stuck the mud is no fun at all but it doesn’t have to be a total disaster. With some simple know-how, you’ll be able to free your car from the mud / snow / ice or whatever else it is that may be preventing it from moving.

The main reason that your vehicle won’t move is because it has lost traction. To move, your vehicle literally needs to get a grip.

So how do we aid traction? Firstly, turn your car off and put the handbrake on. Get out and have a look at the wheels. Try to build up rocks and gravel or twigs or anything else you can find around your tyres. All of this stuff will aid traction when the wheels go over them.

If you have car mats, put them under your rear wheels, if your car is rear-wheel drive or under the front wheels if your vehicle is front-wheel drive. Make sure you put the car mats face down so the grooves or carpet side is on the ground. If you don’t have car mats you can put a blanket, socks, jumpers or anything like that down instead.

Get in the car, start it up and put it in 2nd or 3rd gear if it’s manual, or use the lowest gear if your car is an automatic. Push gently on the throttle and gently release the clutch. Slow and steady is the key to helping the tyres get a grip and getting your car moving again.
