A 7,000 TON cargo ship has run aground off the Galway coast with the owners trying to establish if it can be refloated later today.
The ship ran aground in heavy seas at Cashla Bay in Connemara, Co Galway just before 6am this morning. It had been en route from Gibraltar.
The ship, known as the ‘Pantanal’, is registered in Antigua and Barbuda, according to vesseltracker.com.
Its German owners are now trying to decide if they can refloat it.
A spokesperson for the Valentia coastguard told TheJournal.ie it would be this evening before there was any decision.
The spokesperson added that the 16 crew on board were all fine.
The ship arrived yesterday when it was due to pick up two small passenger ferries at Ros an Mhíl harbour, RTÉ reports.
The two boats had been repossessed by a bank and were sold in Galway last month.
