Hundreds turn out for 'Celebrate the 8th' anti-abortion event in Dublin

Campaigners are calling for the 8th amendment to be protected.

AN ANTI-ABORTION EVENT called ‘Celebrate the 8th’ was held in Dublin city centre this afternoon.

Campaigners at the event are calling for the 8th amendment to be protected. The controversial law gives equal right to the life of the unborn child and the mother.

Sinead Slattery from the Pro Life Campaign told TheJournal.ie, “We’re here to celebrate the eighth amendment … because it is responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people in this country.

If we didn’t have the 8th amendment in our constitution, it’s inevitable that we would have an abortion regime similar to the UK.

Recent figures have shown that each day last year more than nine women travelled from the Republic of Ireland to the UK to have an abortion.

Slattery added that, “Amnesty International is setting the value of the unborn life to zero by liberalising abortion and I would say they are ignoring the pain and devastation of women who have had abortions in the past.”

The event took place from 3pm on Molesworth street.

The hashtag #CelebrateThe8th has been trending on Twitter since early this afternoon but not all tweets are in support of today’s event.

However many others sent tweets from the event:

Speaking at the All Ireland Rosary Rally earlier today Archbishop Eamon Martin said, “In the Ireland of 2016 it takes real strength of character to hold to the fundamental right to life of both a mother and her unborn baby, and especially so in the face of pressure from those who wish to radically redefine Ireland’s social agenda in the name of “progression” and “personal choice” above all else.

“We join our prayers with the thousands who are gathering in Dublin this afternoon to celebrate the equality of life that is enshrined in the eighth amendment.”
