Hundreds hospitalised after 'poisoned' sweets handed out in schools

Seven youths have been arrested.

THERE WAS PANIC at a number of schools in the Philippines this morning when students were suspected of eating ‘poisoned’ sweets.

The incidents occurred in the Surigao del Sur area, with the Phil Star reporting that more than 200 students – across primary school to college level – “felt weakness and nausea” and were rushed to hospital.

GMA News reports that the students were believed to have eaten durian and mangosteen (both types of fruits) sweets. It says that seven youths were arrested by police in connection with the incident.

On Facebook, the Cagwait municipality shared photographs of what appeared to be young people carried out of schools to a waiting ambulance.

It also shared photographs of sweets, telling people to “be alert”.
