The singer’s representative Brian Bumberry said in a statement to AP his death was ‘sudden and unexpected’ on Wednesday night following a performance at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

“His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing,” the statement said.

“They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”

Cornell was a lead singer and songwriter for Soundgarden and Audioslave.

Those to pay tribute to the singer included Billy Idol, Elton John and Alice Cooper.
