Clara murder: Christy Daly shot a number of times

The body of the 47-year-old was found in a drain in Kilbride yesterday.

Updated 1.05pm

A MURDER INVESTIGATION has been officially launched by detectives in Tullamore following the discovery of a body at Kilbride in Clara yesterday.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old local man Christy Daly. His remains were brought to the Midland Regional Hospital yesterday for a post-mortem which has now been completed.

Gardaí confirmed that he suffered a number of gunshot wounds.

An appeal for witnesses to come forward has been issued and anyone with information is asked to call the local station on 057 932 7600 or the Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Detectives are particularly keen to talk to anyone who may have heard gunshots in the Bog Road area between Sunday, 29 December and Tuesday, 7 January.

The grim discovery was made by gardaí yesterday at about 8.45am as they responded to queries about Daly’s welfare. It is understood his caravan had been burnt out during the preceding week.

His body may have been lying in the drain for up to seven days.

Two burnt out cars were also found nearby.

Daly had been released from prison last month after serving a three-year sentence for false imprisonment. He had also been convicted of a number of other offences, including assault, in the past. Reports today indicate that he was under investigation for alleged sex offences but was never charged or prosecuted.
