70 vehicle 'modified car rally' from Lahinch to Cliffs of Moher leads to eight arrests

The illegal rally took place on 7 March.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED eight people in connection with an illegal modified car rally in the Co. Clare area.

The arrests come after an unsanctioned event in the north of the county on 7 March last in which about 70 vehicles took part.

The night time rally began on the promenade in Lahinch before the cars drove to the Cliffs of Moher and then to Doolin before the main gathering took place on Corkscrew Hill in Ballyvaughan.

Gardaí say that, as a result of intelligence gathered on the night, searches were carried out at two houses in Co. Clare this morning.

Eight people have since been arrested around the county, seven men and one woman, all of whom are in their teens and 20s.

The eight people are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The details of the arrests and whether they relate to racing or dangerous driving is currently unclear.
