Clerys staff told it may be months before store re-opens

Clerys closed last Thursday and one staff member told TheJournal.ie that they have been told they may not be returning to work until November.

STAFF AT CLERY’S department store in Dublin may be waiting for months to return to work as damage to the 150-year-0ld store is still being assessed.

Clerys closed last Thursday when heavy rain as well as thunder and lightening damaged the iconic building and the store remains closed today.

Management have not since given an update on the situation but one staff member has told TheJournal.ie that they have been told they may not be returning to work until November.

Staff are concerned over the uncertainty surrounding the situation with the staff member also saying that they have been told to begin looking towards social welfare to tide them over before the store re-opens.

A spokesperson for Clerys today acknowledged that there is “a lot of speculation” around the re-opening of the store but said that staff have not been told it may be as late as November.

He said that assessments are currently underway both in terms of safety and insurance and that staff will be given a clearer  idea of the situation next week.

He added that it is “very much up in the air at the moment” and that the re-opening of the store may be a matter of days or months depending on the outcome of the assessments.

The spokesperson acknowledged that there has been discussions with unions about the situation and that there has also been debate about whether to give an update to the media.

He said that when there is clarity on the situation and staff have been informed an update will be given to the public.
