A third of people think coding is more important than learning Irish

1 in 5 people think coding is more important than maths.

COMPUTER CODING IS more important than learning Irish in school, according to 1 in 3 people surveyed.

Amarach Research carried out a survey of 1,000 adults for UPC, finding that 1 in 5 people think coding is more important than maths.

The survey found that 2 in 3 adults believed that learning computer code is equally as important as learning mainstream subjects including Business, Geography, Music, History, Art, Irish, Science, Languages, Maths and English.

The research also shows that 3 in 4 people said that they would send their child to learn computer coding, if groups and facilities were available in their area.

Though the research suggests that people are aware of the benefits of learning to code, only 1 in 5 are aware of CoderDojo, a global network of volunteer-led, independent, community based programming clubs for young people which teaches them how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology.

Anna-Maria Barry, a UPC staff volunteer at the CoderDojo and Corporate Communications General Manager for UPC Ireland said the research findings are positive, but they indicate there is some way to go to promote the availability and participation in coding and digital skills among parents and young people nationwide.

She said that having a digital skill set “will undoubtedly contribute to their lives for the future”.

Coderdojo runs groups around the country and are opening ten new CoderDojos across Ireland over the next twelve months. For more information, click here>
