Commuting liveblog: Heavy traffic, breezy weather and wet roads

Here’s all the traffic, transport and weather news you need this morning.

IT’S WEDNESDAY, and you’re half way through the week.

We’ll be with you until 9am this morning, helping you get to where you need to go.

Morning, folks.

Not while driving, of course.

First things first: the weather.

Met Éireann says the day will be cold and breezy, mainly dry in the afternoon with rain beginning in the west by evening.

Highest temperatures will be between six to nine degrees.

In Dublin, there’s been a collision on the Navan Road inbound just after M50 northbound at the River Road junction.

Let’s take a look at other Dublin routes:

  • Traffic is already heavy heading into the city on the Swords Road between Collins Avenue and Drumcondra
  • Con Colbert Rd is slow inbound at SCR
  • There are delays on the North Quays from Wolfe Tone Quay through to Bachelors Walk
  • It’s slowing on the way into the city from Edge’s Corner to the Five Lamps on Amiens Street
  • Southbound on Guild St is starting to build approaching Samuel Beckett Bridge
  • Stillorgan Road is slowest between the Trees Road and Fosters Avenue

Traffic’s also moving well around Dublin city centre.

No major delays have been reported yet in Waterford, Limerick or Cork.

In Galway, it’s busy as always heading into Galway Technology Park on Ballybrit Crescent.

AA Roadwatch says there are wet road conditions mainly across the northern half of the country.

If you’re driving in challenging conditions, reduce your speed and keep a distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Back to Dublin: Live Drive is reporting that an ambulance is blocking the left lane of Patrick Street inbound just after the junction with Dean Street. Take care on approach.

In Cork, it’s busy now approaching the Dunkettle Interchange on the N8, N25 and N40 from J10 Mahon.

On the N28 Ringaskiddy Rd northbound, traffic is slow heading through Carrs Hill.

City centre traffic is busiest both ways on Patrick’s Street and Lavitt’s Quay.

There are reports of a breakdown on the N81 Tallaght Bypass inbound near the Greenhills Road junction in Dublin.

The earlier incident on Patrick Street has been cleared, meanwhile.

Traffic is starting to pick up on the M50. Here’s what the Greenhills Park area looks like right now.

AA Roadwatch says it’s “unusually slow” on the M50 northbound from J17/M11 to J16 Cherrywood.

In Dublin, the collision on the Navan Road inbound at Auburn Avenue junction has been cleared.

There are no further reports of a breakdown on the N81 Tallaght Bypass inbound near the Greenhills Road junction.

We all know floods dominated the news after Christmas as Storm Desmond brought misery to large swaths of the country.

So it may come as no surprise that last month was the wettest January since 1948 at Dublin Airport, according to a new Met Éireann weather summary, and the wettest on 42 years in other areas.

Traffic is heavy on the M50 southbound from J5 Finglas to J12 Firhouse, with reports of a broken down vehicle in the outer lane before Blanchardstown.

Northbound is also very slow from J17/M11 to J14 Leopardstown.

In Limerick, there are heavy inbound delays on the Tipperary Road from Beary’s Cross onto the Ballysimon Road as council staff deal with a fuel spill.

A few minutes’ drive away, it’s also busy inbound from the Ballinacurra Road as far as the Crescent, on the Corbally Road inbound from Shannon Banks onto Athlunkard Street and southbound on the Shelbourne Rd from St. Camillus’ Hospital to the Condell Road junction.

If you’re planning to take the M50 this morning, you might want to get out sharpish.

In Cork traffic news:

  • It’s slow now on the N27 South City Link Rd inbound from the South Douglas Road junction through to the Penrose Quay
  • South Douglas Road is also heavy through the N27 junction onto Evergreen Road
  • Traffic is busy approaching the Dunkettle Interchange on the N8 Dublin Road, the N25 Waterford Road and the N40 South Ring Road from J10 Mahon
  • On the N28 Ringaskiddy Road northbound, it’s slow heading through Carrs Hill
  • There’s also heavy traffic on the Rochestown Road heading towards the N28
  • There are delays on the Wilton Road inbound from the Wilton roundabout to the Model Farm Road junction
  • City centre traffic is busiest both ways on Patrick Street and on Lavitt’s Quay

That’s all from us for now. See you back here tomorrow morning!
