Commuting liveblog: Crashes, 'treacherous conditions', and election candidates on some roads

Here’s all the traffic, transport and weather news you need.

WELCOME TO WEDNESDAY.

We’ll be with you until 9am this morning, bringing you all the latest traffic, transport and weather news.

Morning! Aoife Barry here on TheJournal.ie’s commuting liveblog, keeping you up to date on how the roads are across the country this morning.

Spotted something we should know? Email me at aoife@thejournal.ie, tips@thejournal.ie or tweet me at @sweetoblivion26.

Not while driving, of course.

First things first, what’s the weather like?

Frosty and icy across some parts of the country, with outbreaks of rain in parts of Munster, South Leinster and the Atlantic coastal counties.

Met Éireann says that we can expect frost and icy patches on untreated footpaths and roads in many areas this morning.

It adds that: “Any frost and fog will gradually clear to a mainly dry day across northern and eastern areas with some sunny spells developing.” Well, that’s good we suppose. Here’s more:

However, further south and west it will be cloudier with outbreaks of rain affecting parts of Munster, south Leinster as well as Atlantic coastal counties. Westerly winds will be light to moderate; highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Here’s more of what’s happening on the country’s roads, thanks to AA Roadwatch:

Roscommon: Gardaí have been dealing with a crash on Frenchpark/Carrick on Shannon Road.

Kildare: A car was on fire on the Old N9 near Crookstown, but it has been dealt with.

Dublin: There are icy conditions on the Naul Road and also on secondary routes in Knocksedan.

Cavan: There are reports of black ice here on the N3 (between Virginia and Kells)

Cork: Some reports coming in to AA Roadwatch of debris on the N25 Waterford/Cork Road between Carrigtwohill and Little Island. Keep an eye out if you’re driving in that area.

Back to Dublin, here’s what traffic looks like in the city centre right now.

The red lines are hotspots where traffic is particularly slow.

That means the quays – particularly by the Ha’penny Bridge, and Aaran Quay are particularly jammers.

If you want to know a bit more about the weather, here’s our reporter Órla Ryan’s guide to what we can expect today.

A report on icy roads wouldn’t be complete without the gif of the man who slipped on the ice.

We still chat in the office about who the mystery man is. Come forward, mystery slipped-on-the-ice guy.

That reminds us of this Irish comedy classic from Kevin McGahern (please don’t watch this if you’re in the car – bookmark for your lunchbreak):

Everything seems to be running smoothly for the trains this morning, but we’ll let you know if there are any changes.

In the meantime, enjoy this lovely photo of Killiney beach this AM:

Take the Luas most mornings? Remember that tomorrow services won’t be running because of strike action.

As we reported yesterday:

The action is being taken by workers in a dispute over pay. Siptu members at Luas have called for a pay increase of between between 8.5% and 53.8% after tram operator Transdev said no pay increase would be offered over the next five years unless it is in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The strike will kick off tomorrow morning, and normal services won’t resume until Saturday at 6.30am.

Cork: The N72 Park Road in Mallow was closed because of flooding, but AA Roadwatch says it has now reopened:

Some more updates from AA Roadwatch.

In Derry, an overturned lorry means that Keoge Link is closed at the A2 Buncrana Road. There are diversions in place.

Dublin: A truck has broken down on the N7 outbound on the M50 flyover in the left lane, Live Drive is reporting.

It also says:

Thanks to Live Drive for this reminder following Monday night’s shooting:

Back to Cork and an update on that debris we told you about earlier:

Let’s take a look at Dublin City Council’s traffic cameras:

Some roads have been very foggy in the last half hour, like the M50 Blanchardstown Roundabout:

And the M50 at Lucan

And the M50 south of the Finglas Roundabout:

But over in Balbriggan, things are much clearer:

Same at the M50 Tallaght:

There’s an incident on the M50 southbound at J7 Lucan:

The M50 incident has now been cleared, Live Drive reports.

Dublin: Watch out if you’re near Bridge St:

You might not be able to get a good view from your car/train/Luas, so I took this snap of this morning’s sunrise for you:

If you’re in Cork, watch out for black ice on the roads:

Here’s the latest rainfall radar from Met Éireann.

Looking good.

Now, if we could only do something about the cold…

We’ve had debris and ice, but now it looks like something a little unusual has started appearing on the roads:

Careful out there, candidates.

Spot anything similar in your area? Let us know.

In Louth? AA Roadwatch reports a crash on the Dublin Road near Bryanstown, meaning traffic is slow in both directions.

Dublin: The Rock Road is “very slow” from Frascati Shopping Centre through to Ballsbridge on the Merrion Road.

Lights are also out of action at the junction of Donore Avenue and South Circular Road, so take care there.

Mayo: A collision reported on the N58 Ballina/Castlebar Road

Another look at Dublin’s city centre.

The quays don’t look too great…

Still fierce foggy at the Blanchardstown Roundabout:

Watch out in Louth, some lights out:

Also, get your fog lights ready if you’re on the M50 northbound from J9 to J6:

If you’re in Cavan, be very careful on the roads – AA Roadwatch reports black ice on the N3 at Lisgrey, and also between Virginia and Kells at Whitegate Cross.

It says gardaí are reporting “treacherous road conditions” on all routes around Baileborough.

Sligo: Flash flooding reported on Easkey/ Enniscrone Rd (R297) at Finod and Leaffoney; more flash flooding at the Carrowhubbock/ Tullylin Rd (R298) at Lacknaslieva and nearby on the local road at Attychree.

Kilkenny: Flooding has closed Bleach Rd in Kilkenny City.

Back to Dublin, Live Drive is reporting a breakdown on the R139 southbound, just before Clonshaugh Road in the left lane.

That crash has been cleared on Louth’s Dublin Road, but there’s been another one on Donore Road:

It’s time to wind up the Commuting Liveblog for today – but we’ll leave you with some good news.

Remember those election candidates?
