Man (25) charged with murder of mother at family home in Cork

A psychiatric assessment has been ordered for Paul Horgan, whose mother Marian was killed on Monday.

A 25-YEAR-OLD MAN has been charged with the murder of his mother in Cork city on Monday morning.

Paul Horgan (25)  appeared before Cork District Court  today charged with the murder of his 60-year-old mother Marian Horgan at their home at Murmont Avenue, Montenotte, Cork on the morning of 23 November.

Marian Horgan was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday morning at around 8am. She had suffered fatal stab wounds in her house, which is located in a quiet residential area.

Paul Horgan was arrested at the family home on 23 November and was taken to Mayfield Garda Station for questioning and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Psychiatric assessment

This morning at courtroom number 4 at the Washington Street Courthouse in Cork city, Detective Garda Mark Durcan gave evidence of arresting Paul Horgan at Murmount Avenue, Montenotte at 8am on 23 November and bringing him to Mayfield Garda Station.

He said that Horgan made no reply after being cautioned and charged at 9.30pm on 24 November.

The accused did not speak during the brief hearing and kept his head bowed. He was dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans.

Judge Leo Malone was told that the 25-year-old is a student, and granted him free legal aid after Horgan’s defence solicitor, Diarmuid Kelleher, said he was unable to afford a solicitor.

Psychiatric assessment

Kelleher requested that Horgan be given a psychiatric assessment while in custody, which Judge Malone granted.

Horgan was remanded in custody to appear again before Cork District Court on Tuesday 1 December for presentation of the book of evidence.

Marian Horgan was a mother of three and was well known in the locality. She was a keen runner and popular among her neighbours.

Her husband was also injured during the incident on Monday morning and was brought to the Mercy University Hospital in Cork. He underwent emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
