Suspect device found in marshland during search for Ciara Breen

This is the second day they have been called in.

Updated 9.25pm

AN ARMY BOMB disposal team rendered safe a historical find of bomb components discovered during the search for missing woman Ciara Breen in Dundalk.

Soldiers have been assisting gardaí with the search and 61 members of the Defence Forces in total were deployed to the Balmers Bog area today.

The members come from the Aiken barracks in Dundalk.

They found the suspect device and a bomb disposal team was called to the scene where a controlled explosion was carried out. The scene was declared safe just after 6pm.

The search will re-commence tomorrow morning.

Ciara Breen went missing from her home on Bachelor’s Walk in Dundalk in 1997 at the age of 17.

A search was opened in late August for Breen near the Balmer’s Bog area. Gardaí said at the time that the search was expected to continue for a numberof weeks.

A renewed appeal for missing Ciara Breen was issued late last year by gardaí, after two potential witnesses came forward and spoke to detectives about the case.
