Dozens injured after California train crashes into truck on tracks

The driver of the truck fled the scene but is now in police custody.

AT LEAST 30 people have been injured and one person arrested after a commuter train in Southern California crashed into a truck.

Three cars of the Southern California Metrolink commuter train have derailed and tumbled onto their sides after the collision with a truck on tracks in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles.

KTLA reports at least 28 people have been taken to hospital. There were 51 people on the train. Police say they have not found any fatalities.

The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene and was later taken into police custody.

Oxnard police Sergeant Denise Shadinger says the crash reported at 5:44 am this morning. Shadinger said the truck became fully engulfed in flames.

NCB Los Angeles reported earlier that fire-rescue personnel set up a colour-coded triage area with green, yellow and red tarps on the site.

A KABC-TV news helicopter showed firefighters treating numerous people at the scene.

Metrolink’s website says the train was on a run from Ventura County to Los Angeles.
