PEOPLE HAVE TRAVELLED all the way from the US to join the water charges protest due to take place in Dublin next week.
Why?
Members of the Detroit Water Brigade are campaigning against unaffordable water in the US have decided to join forces against Irish Water.
Affordable water
The group are a volunteer-led alliance of “compassionate citizens of Detroit” who are working to bring emergency relief to families facing water shut-offs while advocating for an income-based Water Affordability Plan in Detroit.
Water is currently a publicly owned utility in Detroit, however, the group claims that people who cannot pay have had their water shut off and debt collection agencies have been hired to collect arrears.
The group landed safely in Dublin today, with chants being heard at the airport saying:
From Dublin to Detroit, water is a human right.
Writing on their Facebook page, the Detroit Water Brigade said they are going to be meeting with Right2WaterIreland organisers to strategise about next week’s planned protest.
“Feeling all the love and ‘Céad míle fáilte’ (100,000 welcomes)!” wrote the group.
Before catching their flight to Ireland, they also stated:
Our delegation to Right2WaterIreland National People’s Assembly is leaving Detroit Metro Airport. We are honoured to be standing in solidarity with all those around the world standing up for strong public water systems!
The last major water charges protest in Dublin’s city centre was estimated to have attracted up to 100,000 people, however, others estimated the attendance was much higher than that figure.
The next water charges protest takes place on Wednesday.
