Man sets fire to digger with driver inside at Dublin building site

A local councillor said he hoped this would not stop the progress of building 72 social housing units.

A CONSTRUCTION WORKER in Dublin has been taken to hospital after a man set a digger on fire while the worker was operating the vehicle.

It is understood the man approached the digger on the building site at Orchard Lawns in Ballyfermot this afternoon and threw a lit carton of petrol into the cab.

The driver managed to escape from the vehicle, but sustained minor injuries to his legs. He was treated at the scene by paramedics from the National Ambulance Service and taken to St James’ Hospital.

A garda spokesperson said rocks were also thrown during the incident. No arrests have been made and officers at Ballyfermot garda station are investigating.

Workers are currently building 72 three-bed social housing units and local Sinn Féin councillor Dáithí Doolan described the incident as “unacceptable criminality”.

“Everyone is talking now about the homeless crisis and here we are trying to build houses to hold people,” he told TheJournal.ie. “I hope none of this will stop the progress of the social housing.”
