DONALD TRUMP HAS reportedly called for an arms race when asked to clarify his recent comment about nuclear weapons.

Yesterday President-elect Trump tweeted that the US needs to expand its nuclear capabilities “until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes”.

When speaking to Trump afterwards, MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski asked him to clarify the remark.

She says he told her: “Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.”

CNN has noted Trump’s tweet came a few hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech in Moscow that Russia needs to “enhance the combat capability of strategic nuclear forces, primarily by strengthening missile complexes that will be guaranteed to penetrate existing and future missile defense systems”.

Trump’s comment marks a departure from President Barack Obama’s rhetoric, who in a famous speech in Prague in 2009 called for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
