Organisers end Dublin Christmas lights ceremony early due to overcrowding

A statement from Dublin Town says the event was cut short due to concerns over safety and comfort.

AN EVENT TO mark the turning on of the Christmas lights on Dublin’s Grafton Street was ended early last night due to overcrowding.

The event, organised by business group Dublin Town, attracted larger than anticipated crowds, meaning some couldn’t see the event or hear music acts who were invited to perform.

A statement from Dublin Town says the event was cut short due to concerns over safety and comfort.

“The turning on of the Grafton Street Christmas lights captured the imagination of Dubliners to a greater extent than ever before and coupled with the mild weather the crowds were larger than anticipated.

Due to numbers and in the interest of safety and comfort, organisers decided to shorten the usual programme format meaning Hermitage Green, Glenn and Ronan, and the cast of the Gaiety Panto didn’t appear on stage.

“Also due to the large crowd organisers were conscious that those at the back of the crowd were unable to fully hear and enjoy the performances.”

It is estimated that 15,000 people attended the event.

The lights on Henry Street will be switched on this Thursday at 5pm, while Smithfield will be illuminated on Thursday, 24 November from 4pm.

Why did they even think it was ok to go away in a big group?

@Bernie Collins: The problem is everyone is obsessing with managing the explicit limits & letter of the law. Instead adhere to the spirit of what is being asked. Today in Galway city centre i witnessed patrons at prominent pubs faking adherence to the regulations by leaving pizza boxes on the outdoor tables. No wonder small country “wet” pubs are up in arms. Please cop on and do the right thing. Its 14 weeks to Christmas. We have time to get this right and make it a good Christmas. Do the right thing for yourself, your family & neighbours.

@Anne O’Hara: Golf is one of the sports that is very easy to adhere to Covid-19 restrictions. I’m sure the spread was caused by the antics after the game.

All this tells us is that if any twenty people were tested a majority would test positive. I assume those who were tested didn’t have any symptoms. RIP to the lady who died but I assume if that hadn’t happened we would never know if any of these people had Covid.

I was away in galway for a number of days on a, staycation. Seen golfing groups eating in large number’s and then moving to the empty lounge and having a few more drinks. Same large group the following morning waiting in the foyer for their transport to the golf course. Similarly leaving cert students celebrating their results staying 4 to a room hardly all sister or all brothers then ordering in pizzas at 3am and rooms packed. Hotel management take no interest or responsibility for any of the behaviour from what I can see
