E-cigarettes could be facing an all-out hospital ban

It’s already planned that HSE campuses will be smoke-free by 2015 but e-cigarettes could be included in the policy.

THE HEALTH SERVICE Executive (HSE) is to examine if it’s possible to ban e-cigarettes from all their hospitals and campuses by the end of this year.

Under the HSE’s Tobacco Free Campus Policy, its already planned that smoking by employees, service users, visitors and any other parties will be prohibited within all HSE campuses by 2015.

A spokesperson for the executive confirmed that e-cigarettes are not yet part of this official policy but the executive will be looking at how to include the products in the rules.

Any further legislative change would be driven by the Department of Health according to HSE.

The ban on tobacco smoking is only left to be implemented in four hospitals in the country and extends to smoking anywhere on the campus including outside and in carparks.

At present there are no specific regulations governing electronic cigarettes in Ireland, with the Department of Health saying that they plan to have rules in place this year.

The DoH have said that the cigarettes would soon be banned for under-18s and Irish Rail recently banned the use of the products on their trains.
