PHYSICIST STEPHEN HAWKING has congratulated British actor Eddie Redmayne for winning the Best Actor Oscar for playing him.

Redmayne took the top acting prize for his portrayal of Hawking in ‘The Theory of Everything’. The film told the story of Hawking’s early days in Cambridge University as well as his relationship and marriage to his wife Jane Wilde.

The movie also details Hawking’s battle against motor neurone disease and how it affected his life, work and relationships.

Redmayne had met with Hawking as part of his research for the movie. He told the UK Independent that he was in the middle of in-depth research at the time so he “basically just spewed forth information about him, to him, for the first half an hour” .

Redmayne’s co-star Felicity Jones was also nominated for her role in the film but lost out to Julianne Moore.
