IRISH ACTRESS EILEEN Colgan, best known for her roles as Esther Roche in Fair City and Mynah in Glenroe, has passed away.
She began her career in Dublin in theatre, before moving to London and working in radio and television.
Her performance in Hatchet won her Best Television Performance by an Actress at the Jacobs Award.
Head of Drama with RTÉ Jane Gogan paid tribute to the actress today:
She could be funny, poignant, tragic in the wide variety of roles she played. In the highly demanding world of Fair City Eileen was an inspiration to those she worked with. She will be greatly missed by cast and crew.
“Eileen Colgan had a long and successful career at the Abbey Theatre,”Fiach MacConghail, Director the theatre said.
“Among her memorable performances were as Molly Bloom in Ulysses in Nighttown and as Mrs. Cafferty in Mary Makebelieve. She was a wonderful actress who had a particular gift for mischief which she played brilliantly.”
She is survived by four children Katy, Cathal, Ben and Clara and her eight grandchildren.

I had noticed her missing from fair city but I just assumed she was doing theatre work. I didn’t even know she was ill. Very sad news. She was very talented

She always had that twinkle of divilment in her eyes, perfected down to a fine art. Even if some of the scenes were less than interesting, she had a unique ability in being able to transcend the inherent banality of some of the lines written for her, into something that made her compelling to watch. That takes talent. May she rest in peace.
Why would anybody give a thumbs down/dislike is beyond me? While I wouldn’t have been a fan of her character in Fair City she played the roll well. She was a very talented actress & will be sad loss. Condolences to her family & friends. Go Deis go raibh a ainbh
