Fugitive drug kingpin El Chapo has been caught, Mexican president says

He had been on the run since July.

MEXICAN PRESIDENT ENRIQUE Pena Nieto has said fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been recaptured seven months after he escaped from a maximum security prison.

Pena Nieto wrote in his Twitter account on Friday: “Mission accomplished: we have him.”

El Chapo — the chief of the Sinaloa drug cartel — was on the run after staging a brazen prison break in July during which he slipped through a tunnel leading to an escape hole under his cell’s shower in the Altiplano maximum-security prison in central Mexico.

After exiting the tunnel, Guzman was driven 135 kilometers north to an airstrip, where he boarded a small plane that took him to Sinaloa state, his northwestern bastion, authorities have said.

More details to follow. Additional reporting by AFP
