Security alert in Belfast declared an 'elaborate hoax'

A number of homes had to be evacuated before the device was declared to be a fake.

A SUSPICIOUS DEVICE which led to a security alert in a Belfast suburb has been declared an ‘elaborate hoax’.

A number of homes had to be evacuated and a road was closed after the object was found on the Shore Road in Newtownabbey this morning.

A bomb squad team and PSNI officers carried out an investigation at the scene before the device was declared to be a fake.

There have been an increased number of security alerts around Newtownabbey over the past week.
