Tent, sleeping bag, glowsticks: Electric Picnic begins

Heading to the Picnic? You lucky so-and-so.

HAVE YOU BEEN having nightmares about sleeping in a tent, been fervently stockpiling baby wipes, and gathering mini cans of dry shampoo?

Congratulations, you’re heading to the three-day Electric Picnic festival today (or you might need to have a word with your subconscious).

The festival kicks off today in Stradbally, Co Laois, and is set to be jammed with very happy and lucky campers, as for the first time ever it has sold out.

It was announced today that legendary musician Giorgio Moroder had to pull out of the Picnic due to the concerns of doctors – and he won’t be replaced.

However, people can look forward to seeing not just Fatboy Slim, Bjork, My Bloody Valentine and Robert Plant, but a rake of Irish bands, many of whom make up the bulk of the Body & Soul arena line up. (Here’s the Body & Soul timetable)

As it’s the tenth birthday of the festival, the Electric Picnic team say they have some rather great treats lined up – including birthday cake for every single one of the 35,000 people attending the event.

Plus, people from the local churches in Stradbally will hold a lucky dip that contains some golden tickets offering the winner free entry with a friend to the next 10 Electric Picnics. Yowza, yowza, yowza.

If you’re bringing your smartphone with you, there’s an Electric Picnic app you can download. Bringing your children? There’s a special area just for their entertainment too.

One thing – if you’re heading to the festival, there are definitely some things you SHOULDN’T say to people. We have a handy list of them right here.

We also have some tips that you should take note of to help you stay safe while you’re there.

Oh, and if you’re not going to the festival? Here, let us turn that frown upside-down:
