ESB says about 25,000 customers without power after wind damage

ESB says it hopes to have power restored to areas affected by the close of business today.

AROUND 25,000 ESB customers are without power currently due to wind damage to power lines.

The majority of power outages are in the west and north west of the country from Belmullet in Mayo up to Letterkenny in north Donegal where around 14,000 customers have been affected.

Areas of Longford and Roscommon are also experiencing outages.

The main damage has been caused to lines being brought down by trees that have fallen in the wind.

Winds speeds of 144 kilometres per hour have been recorded in some places and the storm is expected to peak this lunchtime, according to ESB.

ESB crews are out repairing the damage and it is hoped that all customers will have power restored by close of business today.

People are advised to avoid any lines that are down and if they come across lines that are down to ring the emergency number on 1850 372 999.
