Police investigate in the Springfield Drive area of Falkirk, in the wake of the killing. Andrew Milligan

Man stabbed escort 44 times at his home - before raping two others

Steven Mathieson was found at the house after the two women escaped and raised the alarm.

A MAN WHO killed a 23-year-old woman and sexually assaulted two others at his home in Falkirk has been convicted at the High Court in Glasgow today.

Steven Mathieson pleaded guilty to the murder of escort Luciana Maurer after attacking her at the house on 4 December last.

The 38-year-old also pleaded guilty to the rape and abduction of two other women, aged 22 and 26, who he detained at the property the same evening.

The two women, who also worked as escorts, were later able to escape from the house and sought help from neighbours, who called the police.

Mathieson was found inside the house when officers arrived, and was subsequently arrested and charged.

The BBC reports that his four-year-old son was sleeping in the house as the attacks took place. Luciana Maurer was stabbed 44 times by Mathieson, according to the broadcaster.

“The incidents that took place within the property in Springfield Drive led to the death of one woman and left two other females traumatised and extremely distressed having been the victims of serious sexual assaults,” Detective Inspector Dave Pinkney from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said in a statement.

“Police responded quickly to the area and detained Mathieson almost immediately.

“Following extensive forensic enquiries he was ultimately charged in connection with all of the reported offences.

“I would like to thank the victims and the family of Luciana Maurer for their courage and assistance during the course of this investigation.

While nothing can undo the pain Steven Mathieson’s actions have caused, they can take some solace in his conviction as we await his sentence.

“The murder and subsequent police activity impacted greatly on the community at the time,” Chief Inspector Mandy Paterson, the local area commander said.

“This early guilty plea will be welcome news for those who have been affected locally and beyond.”
