Question: If elected, do you promise to sit for the entire five-year term?

While some candidates committed completely, others said they couldn’t promise to still be there in five years if elected.

In our audit of the Ireland South European election candidates, we asked each candidate to answer questions on nine of the most pressing issues facing Ireland and Europe in the coming years.

If elected, do you promise to sit for the entire five-year term?

Sheila Nunan

Yes. I have stepped down as General Secretary of the INTO and I have no other ambitions other than to serve the people of Ireland South for a full five-year term.

Liam Minehan

Oh definitely, definitely, definitely.

Jan Van De Ven

Yes.

Diarmuid O’Flynn

If I’m lucky enough to live that long, and health permitting, absolutely.

Mick Wallace

I don’t do promises.

Grace O’Sullivan

100%. I am going to Europe and you will not see me moving unless I have an absolute disaster in my personal life. I am very, very committed to Europe.

Liadh Ní Riada

Yes, that is my intention and I will be proud to continue standing up for Irish interests in Europe.

Breda Gardner

Yes.

Peter O’Loughlin

I can’t promise that. Whatever position allows us to work in the best interest of our nation and our people is the position we’ll pursue. We have very strong allies in Europe and I’ve been thankful and honoured to represent the Irish nation in international dialogue in Europe so I’d be more than happy over there, but ultimately all that matters is what’s best for Ireland.

Colleen Worthington

Yes, god willing.

Deirdre Clune

Yes.

Andrew Doyle

Nick Bradshaw Nick Bradshaw

Yes, I do. In addition to my current Ministerial role, I have over 20 years’ experience as a public representative, serving at every level from constituency chair to County Councillor, Chairman of Wicklow County Council, as a TD and as Chair of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee.

My career to date has led me to this election and if successful, I will be very eager to start the five year term – I have a lot of work to do.

Seán Kelly

Yes, I have worked hard for my constituents for the last 10 years as an MEP and if re-elected, I will work hard for the entirety of the next five years.
