The new Further Education and Training Authority Solas is replacing An Foras Áiseanna Saothair, now that the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD, has signed the order for its establishment.

SOLAS will operate under the aegis of the Department of Education and Skills. It will work  in partnership with the 16 new Education and Training Boards and will be responsible for the integration, co-ordination and funding of training and further education programmes around Ireland.

Minister Quinn said the establishment of SOLAS “marks another major milestone in delivering this Government’s ambitious educational reform programme”.

The board of SOLAS will be chaired by Pat Delaney, the former director of IBEC’s Small Firm’s Association.

Education and Training Boards Ireland welcomed the news, with its General Secretary Michael Moriarty saying it “faces a daunting task to deliver on the vision as set out by Minister Quinn”.

He said that the capacity to deliver training programmes can only happen in the necessary sources are provided to teachers, tutors, trainers and administrators.
